FAQ

Financials & Insurance

Do you accept health insurance? No, we are a cash-based practice and do not bill insurance directly. The current insurance model often limits the time a doctor can spend with a patient and restricts which diagnostic tests can be ordered. By operating outside of this system, we can dedicate significantly more time to your care, run comprehensive diagnostics that insurance might deny, and create a treatment plan based on your best interests, not reimbursement rates.

Do you accept Medicare or Medicaid? No. The Synergy Clinic has “opted out” of Medicare. This means that Medicare patients are welcome to see Dr. Metcalfe, but they must sign a private contract agreeing to pay out-of-pocket for all services.
Important Note: Because of federal regulations, neither you nor our office can submit a claim to Medicare for reimbursement. These costs will not apply toward your Medicare deductible, and Medigap/supplemental plans will not cover them. However, you can still use your Medicare benefits for prescriptions, labs, and imaging orders we send to outside facilities.

Can I use my health insurance for labs and imaging? Yes. While our professional fees for office visits are paid directly by you, we can order blood work, X-rays, MRIs, and other imaging studies through facilities that accept your insurance (such as Quest, LabCorp, or Vail Health). In these cases, the facility will bill your insurance directly, just as if the order came from a traditional primary care doctor. (Note: Some specialized functional medicine tests may not be covered by insurance; we will always discuss costs with you beforehand.)

What is a superbill and how do I use it? A superbill is a detailed medical receipt containing the diagnosis and procedure codes required by insurance companies. If your insurance plan includes out-of-network benefits, you can submit this superbill to request reimbursement.

  • How it works: You pay for your visit at the time of service, we provide the superbill, and you submit it to your insurer. Reimbursement rates depend on your specific plan’s deductible and out-of-network coverage.
  • Note for Medicare Patients: Federal laws prevent us from providing superbills for Medicare reimbursement. You cannot submit our visits to Medicare.

Can I use my HSA or FSA? Yes. You can typically use your Health Savings Account (HSA) or Flexible Spending Account (FSA) to pay for medical consultations, lab fees, and prescribed supplements. We recommend checking with your specific plan administrator to confirm eligibility.

How do I pay for my visit? Payment is due at the time of service. Our preferred payment methods are check, cash, Zelle or Venmo. We also accept major credit cards with a 3% processing fee.

Services & Scope of Practice

What conditions do you treat? As a board-certified Internal Medicine physician, Dr. Metcalfe addresses a wide range of medical issues. However, the clinic specializes in hormone replacement for men and women, health optimization (longevity), medical weight loss, and high-altitude consultations.

Do you offer primary care services? We do not offer traditional primary care services at this time. Our services are designed to complement, not replace your relationship with a Primary Care Physician (PCP). You should remain established with a PCP for managing acute illnesses (like the flu), vaccinations, and standard cancer screenings (such as mammograms, pap tests, and colonoscopies).

What makes The Synergy Clinic different from a traditional doctor? Because we are not constrained by insurance protocols, we can take a less bureaucratic approach—focusing on prevention and optimization rather than just treating sickness. Dr. Metcalfe spends time understanding your unique physiology and goals. We may order more in-depth testing than a traditional doctor and often recommend supplements and lifestyle modifications in addition to (or instead of) traditional prescription medications.

Who is a good candidate for your services? We work best with individuals who are motivated to take a proactive role in their well-being. Whether you are an athlete looking for an edge, or simply want to age gracefully and maintain high energy levels, our practice is for those who want to optimize their healthspan, not just their lifespan.

Logistics & Policies

Do you offer virtual consultations? Yes. However, we prefer that your initial consultation be in person to allow for a comprehensive physical exam. Follow-up visits and check-ins can often be completed via telemedicine for your convenience.

Do you see children? At this time, The Synergy Clinic only treats patients over the age of 18.

What is your cancellation policy? We value your time and ours. We respectfully request at least 24 hours’ notice for cancellations or rescheduling. Appointments canceled with less than 24 hours’ notice will incur a $100 fee.
